Emanuel Congregation

Emanuel Congregation, one of America’s great urban congregations, is a contemporary Reform synagogue that has served Chicago’s Jewish community for more than 100 years. We draw upon tradition to guide our membership in a commitment to relevant study and meaningful worship. Our congregation is diverse, drawing people of all ages and from all parts of the city. We are committed to reaching out to every Jewish household and embracing those who seek spiritual and intellectual leadership today and in the future.

Adults may participate in a variety of courses with the rabbis, cantor and educators in the congregation throughout the year. Hebrew classes with the cantor and studies of the service are available with an option for an adult Bar or Bat Mitzvah. The congregation also offers a short Hebrew reading course.

Our weekly Shabbat services are balanced between traditional Hebrew prayers and melodies and relevant American Jewish liturgy. The Torah is also read so that all may understand and appreciate it. Sermons are both informative and intellectually challenging. All members are encouraged to participate in services on a regular basis.

Scholar-in-Residence and Sunday seminars feature well-known writers and philosophers who address important, news-worthy Jewish issues. Outreach programs and support groups assist community members seeking to affiliate and new Emanuel members. Other programs include: Jewish-Christian Dialogue, Association of Reform Zionists of America lectures, Jewish music concerts, a strong social justice component and Jewish-Muslim Dialogue.
